Traditionally Fashionable

It is not difficult to guess the mementos you would take home if you were a tourist visiting India. Yes, you guessed it right – Indian handicraft!  Not just for tourists, but even for Indians what can be a better gift than handicrafts. The rich and the varied Indian tradition reflects the best in the handmade bed spreads, photo frames, traditional Indian paintings, wall hangings, Indian jewelry, sculptures, pottery, handcrafted furniture, home decorations etc.

If you have an eye for opportunities you will not miss the business potential that the aesthetic Indian handicrafts offer. The market for it, both inside and outside the country is immense.

Market Potential

According to Mr. Mohit Kalra, who owns an online retail portal specializing in handicraft known by the name of Handicraft Store, the sale of handicraft has picked up in the last three months. Ten months earlier, there was not much demand for these aesthetic products. With the economy recovering from the slowdown, things are turning up for the handicraft industry as well.

The handicraft exports have gone up by 19% and it may touch US $120 million in July 2010 as against US$101 million in the corresponding period previous year says the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH). Handicraft items like wood works, shawls and imitation jewellery have played a major role in take the graph chart up for the handicraft exports.

According to the provisional data available, the exports of handicrafts have shown an increase of Rs. 535.82 crores, from Rs. 8183.12 to Rs. 8718.94 crores, an increase of 6.55% in rupees term during the year 2009-10.

Popular Products

Talking about the most popular products Mr Kalra says, “Jharokha and gem stone paintings are the most popularly sold products of our portal.” Apart from these, wood works, shawls and imitation jewellery remain to be all time favourite, especially in the foreign market.

According to EPCH during the period of 2009-10, the exports of art metal ware, wood wares, hand printed textiles scarves have increased by 4.88%, 15.17%, 5.06% respectively. Overall an increase in the rupee term was 6.55% seen in the export of handicrafts.

The most popular mode of sale

It’s an easy guess – the online mode. Like any other product the most popular of selling handicraft is the online mode. There are numerous e-commerce sites, like IndiaMart which have a several suppliers of handicraft registered with them. This reduces the initial expenditure in setting up a handicraft business.

Another sales channel for handicraft is exhibitions and fairs.  There are several supporting organizations which host exhibitions and fair regularly. These can be used to showcase business and other marketing initiatives. For example, EPCH is organizing the 30th Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair (Autumn) 2010 in Noida later this year from October 17-20 and is planning to come up with more events that promotes the products of the SME oriented handicraft export sector with an objective to boost the demands for handicraft products further under SME.
