Apple has struck a deal for Ascend.io, an AI data engineering startup operated by Ascension Labs, in what is largely an acqui-hire. The deal closed on June 30, 2026 and became public through the European Commission’s list of acquisitions under the Digital Markets Act, which requires Apple to report acquisitions above a certain size.
Financial terms were not disclosed and Apple has not announced plans for the technology.
Under the agreement, Apple has the right to make employment offers to certain employees, a non-exclusive licence to Ascend’s intellectual property and the assignment of certain patents. The filing did not describe the deal as an acquisition, consistent with Apple’s earlier arrangements with Huxe, founded by former NotebookLM developers and Samplab, a music-editing startup.
Ascend has replaced its website with a shutdown notice, without naming Apple or giving a service termination date. “Ascend is winding down operations as we prepare for our next great adventure,” the company said in the notice.
