JSW Greentech has entered India electric commercial vehicle market with the launch of its new EV brand, Ampstar. The company showcased a 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer and an electric bus in Mumbai. Commercial production of these vehicles is expected to begin at the company’s greenfield manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
JSW Group is investing around ₹2,500 crore in the first phase of its electric commercial vehicle business. The 90-acre manufacturing plant will have an annual production capacity of 15,000 vehicles, including 10,000 electric buses and 5,000 electric trucks. JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal said the company aims to accelerate India’s transition from diesel-powered commercial vehicles to electric mobility.
Ampstar will initially focus on 55-tonne electric tractor-trailers for applications across sectors such as steel, cement, mining and ports. The company plans to expand its portfolio with tippers, fixed-body trucks and dumpers. Its trucks will be offered with both fixed and swappable battery options, with battery configurations customised according to customer requirements and specific applications.
The company will initially focus on closed-loop operations, where vehicles operate on fixed routes connecting factories, mines and ports. Ampstar’s electric bus range will span 7 to 18 metres and can be used for staff transportation, city services, school buses and airport operations. The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant will include facilities for truck cabin manufacturing, bus body building and battery-pack assembly.
Ampstar will initially follow a direct B2B sales model instead of establishing a nationwide dealership network. The company will offer vehicles through outright purchase, cost-per-kilometre and wet-lease models. It will also provide financing support, charging infrastructure, maintenance services and Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) solutions.
