As India celebrated the festive season, food delivery apps Swiggy and magicpin witnessed an unprecedented surge in orders, highlighting how online food delivery had become a central part of the country’s celebrations.
Anshoo Sharma, CEO and Co-founder of magicpin, said the platform — India’s third-largest in the food delivery space had been preparing for heightened demand in the lead-up to Diwali. “We expected to double last year’s numbers on food delivery,” Sharma told PTI.
Swiggy’s Chief Business Officer, Sidharth Bhakoo, noted that cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata led the order charts, while Surat, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vadodara also saw strong participation.
Among top picks, choco lava cakes dominated dessert orders across metros, while Kolkata’s enduring love for biryani remained unmatched. “The data reflected one clear trend — food delivery had become the heart of how India celebrated together,” Bhakoo said.
On magicpin, vegetarian and thali orders had surged by 40% during Navratri, followed by a rebound in non-vegetarian dishes once the festival concluded. The company also recorded a 2.5x jump in bulk and party food orders after Navratri, with momentum peaking on October 10, when overall deliveries rose 30% above regular levels.
