Amazon has announced a major expansion of its India tech operations, confirming it is on track to invest ₹12.7 billion to scale up cloud and artificial intelligence capabilities nationwide. The funding will significantly expand Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure in Telangana and Maharashtra two states rapidly emerging as core hubs for data centres and digital innovation.
A major focus of the plan is India’s small-business economy. Amazon said it will roll out a suite of AI-powered tools designed to support more than 15 million micro and small enterprises. New offerings include AI-driven seller assistants, enhanced Seller Central features, automated product-listing generators a creative studio for ad development and a video-creation tool aimed at reducing the cost and complexity of video advertising. The company said these tools are intended to help entrepreneurs whether in major metros or tier-3 towns improve listings, streamline operations and boost visibility.
For consumers, Amazon.in is set to become more personalised and intuitive as the company deepens its use of generative AI. Its AI assistant, Rufus, already helps users interpret complex queries, compare products, review price trends and access visual explainers. Upcoming features such as Lens AI for image-based searches and AR View for real-world product visualisation are expected to strengthen product discovery.
Amazon also announced a large education-focused initiative, pledging to bring AI literacy programmes to 4 million government school students by 2030. The curriculum includes hands-on experiments, teacher training and career exposure, and is aligned with India’s National Education Policy 2020. The company said it aims to equip students in underserved communities with future-ready skills.
“AI can be a great equaliser in India. We believe every Indian students, small businesses and customers should benefit from this transformation” said Samir Kumar, Amazon India’s Country Manager.
The company said its latest commitments reflect a long-term vision to bolster India’s digital infrastructure and strengthen the country’s competitiveness in AI and cloud innovation as demand surges across retail, commerce and public services.
