Amit Metaliks has laid the foundation stone for an integrated steel plant in Purulia, West Bengal, with a proposed investment of Rs 4,000 crore.

Amit Metaliks Limited has laid the foundation stone for its upcoming integrated steel plant in Raghunathpur, Purulia, West Bengal. With a proposed investment of around Rs 4,000 crore, the project is expected to contribute to the region’s industrial development, employment generation and economic growth.

The project will be spread across approximately 151 acres and will have an annual steel production capacity of around 1.2 million tonnes. According to the company, the plant is targeted for completion within the next 1,000 days.

The project is expected to create around 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. It is also likely to generate opportunities for local businesses across logistics, transportation, engineering, maintenance, construction, services and small and medium enterprises.

According to Amit Metaliks, the proposed facility will be a modern and fully integrated steel manufacturing complex, covering the manufacturing process from iron ore to finished steel within a single ecosystem. The plant will also have the capability to manufacture specialised grades of steel for the automotive sector.

Sustainability has been incorporated into the project’s planning. The company has proposed a floating solar power facility for the steel plant, which is expected to be among the early initiatives of its kind associated with a steel plant in West Bengal.

Speaking at the foundation stone ceremony, the West Bengal Chief Minister welcomed the investment and highlighted the role of industrial projects in creating employment, strengthening local economies and generating new opportunities for young people.

Amit Kumar Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, Amit Metaliks Limited, said the project represents more than the foundation of a steel plant and marks the beginning of the company’s long-term commitment to Purulia and West Bengal. He added that the company aims to contribute to employment generation, skill development, local communities and the economic progress of the region.

According to the company, key approvals for the project were secured in approximately 90 days with support from the West Bengal government. Amit Metaliks said the development has further strengthened its confidence in investing and expanding industrial operations in the state.

Focus on Local Skills and Community Development

Amit Metaliks plans to establish a skill development institute in Purulia to prepare local youth for employment opportunities at the plant and within the wider industrial ecosystem expected to develop around it.

The company community initiatives include scholarships for students, installation of borewells and support for improving water facilities in schools. It has also committed to planting one lakh trees in Purulia to increase green cover around the project and surrounding areas.

The company expects the economic impact of the project to extend beyond the plant, creating opportunities across transportation, logistics, engineering, construction, hospitality, retail and MSMEs. The initiative is expected to encourage greater local participation and provide young people with more employment opportunities closer to home.
