Bata India Limited has announced the appointment of Sanjay Rao as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, marking a leadership transition at one of India's largest footwear and retail companies. Rao joined Bata India as Whole-time Director and Chief Executive Officer effective 24th August 2026, and will assume the role of Managing Director and CEO from 1st October 2026, for a five-year term ending 23rd August 2031, subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals.
Rao joins Bata India from Nike, where he served as Senior Director, Nike Retail, overseeing operations across France and the Benelux region. Prior to Nike, he played a key role in establishing Zara's Indian operations through its joint venture with the Tata Group while working at Inditex, Zara's parent company. He has also served as Country Director for Guess in France and holds an MBA from INSEAD. He subsequently held senior leadership positions across India, South Asia and China.
Commenting on the appointment, Bata Group CEO Panos Mytaros said Rao brings deep retail and consumer experience, an international perspective and a strong understanding of the Indian market, adding that he knows how to build businesses, develop teams and create momentum. Mytaros further noted that India is one of Bata Group's most important markets and among its biggest long-term growth opportunities.
The appointment comes as Bata India looks to accelerate growth and deepen its consumer and retail presence, at a time when India's retail and consumer sector continues to evolve through digital transformation, shifting consumer preferences and rising demand for premium and lifestyle-focused products.
