EV Passenger Vehicle Registrations Jump 94% in September
India electric passenger vehicle registrations surged 94% year-on-year to a record 35,948 units in September 2026, taking EV penetration to 8.3%.

India electric passenger vehicle (EV) market recorded strong growth in September 2026. According to Vahan data, EV passenger vehicle registrations increased 94% year-on-year to a record 35,948 units in September. Registrations were also up 11% from 32,433 units in August, while EV penetration in the passenger vehicle market increased from 7.6% to 8.3%. During April-September 2026, total EV passenger vehicle registrations stood at 1,91,751 units, up 89% from 1,01,546 units during the same period last year.

Tata Motors retained its leadership position in the segment with 14,722 EV passenger vehicle registrations in September. The company’s registrations doubled year-on-year and increased 7% compared with August, giving it a market share of 41%. Mahindra & Mahindra ranked second with 7,741 registrations, recording 116% year-on-year and 14% month-on-month growth. Together, Tata Motors and Mahindra accounted for nearly 63% of total EV passenger vehicle registrations in September.

JSW MG Motor India ranked third with 5,226 registrations, although its market share declined to 14.5%. VinFast followed in fourth place with 2,961 registrations, with its market share increasing to 8.2%. Kia ranked fifth with 1,256 registrations and a 3.5% market share. The top five manufacturers together accounted for nearly 89% of total electric passenger vehicle registrations in September.

Among other manufacturers, Maruti Suzuki recorded 1,095 EV registrations in September, down 26% from August. Hyundai registered 789 units, a 6% month-on-month decline, although its volumes increased 95% year-on-year. BYD recorded 831 registrations, up 47% from August, while BMW’s registrations increased 73% to 501 units. Tesla recorded 279 registrations, representing a 111% month-on-month increase. During April-September, Tata Motors registered 76,580 EVs, while Mahindra recorded 43,677 units.

According to Nuvama, the availability of more model options and the growing aspirational value of electric vehicles are supporting EV adoption in India. Tata Motors and Mahindra together accounted for nearly 63% of first-half EV passenger vehicle registrations, while JSW MG Motor India held a 17.4% share. Kia’s registrations during April-September increased 219% year-on-year to 4,134 units. At the current pace, India’s electric passenger vehicle registrations could exceed 3.8 lakh units in FY27.
