The Ambani family led India’s most valuable family businesses in 2026, according to a new report by Barclays Private Clients and Hurun India, followed by the Birla, Jindal, Bajaj and Mahindra families.
The 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses List ranks India’s most valuable family businesses based on valuations as of June 30, 2026. To qualify, a next-generation member of the founding family must be actively involved in managing the business or serve on its board. The combined value of the listed businesses rose 27.5% from the 2024 edition, even as the Nifty 50 declined 1.1% and the Sensex fell 3.7% over the same period.
Adrish Ghosh, Head of Barclays Private Bank, India, said, “India’s family-owned enterprises continue to be a powerful force behind the country’s wealth creation, employment and long-term economic growth. The 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses List highlights their scale and impact, with the top 300 family businesses now valued at USD 1.46 trillion (INR 138 lakh crore), having added nearly INR 30 lakh crore in value since 2024. Collectively, they employ more than 5.4 million people, generate INR 56 lakh crore in revenue and contribute INR 1.9 lakh crore in taxes, equivalent to around 17% of India’s corporate tax collections.”
At USD 1.46 trillion, the combined valuation of the list would rank as the world’s 18th-largest economy by GDP, ahead of the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Poland. The top 10 families alone account for INR 70.5 lakh crore of the total, up from INR 69 lakh crore a year earlier.
First-Generation Businesses Gain Ground
The report introduced a separate list of 100 first-generation family businesses, valued at INR 77.8 lakh crore. Combined, the two lists cover 400 families with a total value of INR 215.8 lakh crore.
The Ambani family retained the top position among established family businesses with a value of INR 25.8 lakh crore, despite an 8.5% decline over the year. The Kumar Mangalam Birla family ranked second at INR 8.14 lakh crore, followed by the Jindal family at INR 8.02 lakh crore, the Bajaj family at INR 7.7 lakh crore and the Mahindra family at INR 5.15 lakh crore.
Among first-generation businesses, the Adani family led with INR 19.6 lakh crore, followed by the Sunil Bharti Mittal family at INR 12.1 lakh crore and the Dilip Shanghvi family at INR 4.55 lakh crore. The number of families valued at USD 1 billion or more rose 48% year-on-year to 230.
Family Offices and Women Leaders
The report said 79 of the top 300 families operate family offices, while 36% of first-generation families have established similar structures.
As many as 18 companies on the list are led by women. Priya Agarwal Hebbar of Hindustan Zinc heads the most valuable woman-led business, followed by Roshni Nadar Malhotra of HCL Technologies. Falguni Nayar of FSN E-Commerce Ventures is the only woman leading a first-generation business on the list.
Anas Rahman Junaid, Founder and Chief Researcher, Hurun India, said, “The list grew 27.5% since 2024, with the top 300 families adding INR 4,076 crore in value daily. He also highlighted the rise of first-generation businesses, led by the Adani family, and the increase in billion-dollar families to 230.”
