Vedanta Aluminium, a business of Vedanta Limited, has been granted a patent for a unique technology that recovers 99% pure graphite from waste produced during the aluminium manufacturing process. This graphite can be used in battery production, particularly in lithium-ion batteries.
Developed in collaboration with CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar, the technology utilizes by-products such as Spent Pot Lining (SPL) and Shot Blast Dust from aluminium production to recover graphite. This process could provide a domestic alternative to imported graphite, benefiting India’s critical minerals needs.
Rajeev Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, highlighted that the technology comes at a time when India is seeing a surge in the demand for electric vehicles and battery storage solutions. The innovation will help reduce India’s dependence on imported graphite.
In 2024, India imported approximately $41 million worth of graphite. Vedanta’s new technology marks a significant step towards making India more self-reliant. Vedanta Aluminium is India’s largest aluminium producer and is ranked second globally in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024 for the aluminium industry.
