Tata Group battery manufacturing company, Agratas, has announced significant progress in the construction of its battery production facility in Sanand, Gujarat, with the structural steel framework nearing completion. Spread across 320 acres, the facility aims to strengthen India’s clean energy capabilities, with an initial annual production capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh).
Currently, over 2,000 construction workers and more than 700 personnel from vendor organizations are actively working on the site. This marks a significant step toward enhancing India’s domestic capabilities in advanced battery cell manufacturing.
Anand Sodha, Vice President of Supply Chain at Agratas, highlighted the momentum of the project, noting that the facility is set to become one of the most advanced manufacturing plants in the country.
Two Tata Group companies—Tata Projects Limited and Tata Consulting Engineers—are supporting the construction. Rahul Sharma, Strategic Business Unit Head for Urban Built Form at Tata Projects, emphasized the company's focus on delivering large-scale manufacturing infrastructure while maintaining sustainable construction practices.
Beyond the physical construction, Agratas is developing an integrated supply chain system that will provide real-time visibility across imports, exports, and domestic logistics. The company also plans to implement automated operations and sustainable transport solutions aligned with global standards.
Agratas operates as a global battery business within the Tata Group portfolio. In addition to the Sanand facility, the company is constructing a manufacturing plant in Bridgwater, United Kingdom. Both facilities are expected to serve customers in the mobility and energy storage sectors.
The Sanand project forms part of India’s broader clean energy transition strategy, aiming to establish domestic production capacity for electric vehicle batteries and grid energy storage systems.
