The University of Bristol in the United Kingdom has opened its first international campus in India. The university officially inaugurated the Mumbai Enterprise Campus in Powai, Mumbai, on September 10, 2026 and welcomed its inaugural cohort of students. The campus marks an important initiative by the university to promote international higher education, research and industry collaboration in India.
Focus on Data Science and Finance
The Mumbai Enterprise Campus is focused on subjects that are witnessing growing demand in education and employment. For the 2026 intake, the campus is offering programmes such as BSc Data Science, MSc Finance and Investment, MSc Financial Technology with Data Science and MA Immersive Arts. According to the university, the degree programmes offered in Mumbai are based on courses available in Bristol but have been adapted to the Indian context and the requirements of the local employment market.
Along with academic education, students will have opportunities to engage in research, innovation, internships and industry collaborations. According to the university, the programmes will also emphasise research-based teaching, project-based learning and practical exposure to real-world work environments.
Focus on Research and Innovation with IIT Bombay
The Mumbai Enterprise Campus has been established in the Cignus development area in Powai. The campus is located directly opposite the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. The University of Bristol has entered into a strategic partnership with IIT Bombay, with a focus on promoting translational research and innovative teaching.
The university aims to connect education with research, industry and innovation. Students at the campus will have opportunities to work on real-world challenges through research collaborations, experiential learning and industry partnerships. In addition, Global Mobility opportunities are planned to provide students with academic experiences between India and the UK.
100% Tuition Fee Waiver for Students from Maharashtra
Under an agreement between the University of Bristol and the Government of Maharashtra, a special scholarship scheme has been introduced for talented students from the state. Under the scheme, selected students will receive a 100% tuition fee waiver for the full duration of their undergraduate studies, along with financial support and internship opportunities at the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office.
Four recipients of the scholarship scheme attended the campus inauguration ceremony. Among them was Neha Kushe, who chose to pursue a Master’s degree in Finance and Investment after a background in Physics. She said that the opportunity to pursue globally recognised education from the University of Bristol while remaining in Mumbai is significant for her.
Target to Enrol Up to 250 Students in the First Year
In June 2026, the University of Bristol said it expected to enrol up to 250 students across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the Mumbai Enterprise Campus in its first year. By the fifth year, the university expects the student population to grow to more than 2,500. Through programmes in Data Science, Economics, Finance and Immersive Arts, the campus aims to provide students with global education and employment-oriented skills.
Professor Evelyn Welch, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol, said that the Mumbai campus marks an important milestone in the university’s 150-year history. According to her, the campus will create new opportunities for research, innovation and knowledge exchange while focusing on equipping students with education and skills relevant to future needs.
Meanwhile, Professor Michelle Jones, Director and Executive Dean of the Mumbai Enterprise Campus, said that the campus will strengthen higher education collaboration between India and the UK while connecting students with industry, innovation and society.
During the inauguration ceremony, the University of Bristol also conferred an honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) degree on its alumna Shanta Gokhale. Through the Mumbai campus, the university aims to expand access to globally recognised education in India and strengthen collaboration between education, research and industry.
