Ashok Leyland to Invest ₹5,000 Crore in Battery Localization
Ashok Leyland will invest ₹5,000 crore over the next 7–10 years in battery localization, partnering with CALB Group to develop advanced batteries. The move aims to strengthen its EV portfolio and expand into energy storage solutions.

Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of the Hinduja Group, has announced plans to invest over ₹5,000 crore in battery localization in India over the next 7–10 years. The investment will strengthen Ashok Leyland and its subsidiary Switch Mobility’s electric vehicle portfolio while also catering to non-captive demand in the automotive and energy storage sectors.

To achieve this, the company has entered into a long-term exclusive partnership with China’s leading battery technology firm, CALB Group. Together, the two companies will develop and manufacture next-generation batteries for both automotive and non-automotive applications, including energy storage systems.

Ashok Leyland Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja said the company is committed to shaping the future of sustainable mobility in India and that this partnership is a major step towards creating a localized battery supply chain.

Managing Director & CEO Shenu Agarwal stated that the new battery business will initially focus on the automotive sector and later expand to non-automotive areas such as energy storage. A Global Centre of Excellence will also be established to drive innovation in battery materials, recycling, battery management systems, and advanced manufacturing processes.

Ashok Leyland, India’s second-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, operates in 50 countries with a wide product range of trucks (2T to 55T GTW) and buses (9–80 seats). The company is increasingly focusing on sustainable solutions, including electric, CNG, LNG, and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Meanwhile, CALB Group is a global leader in new energy technology, with industrial bases across several Chinese cities. The company is building large-scale intelligent manufacturing capabilities to establish itself as a global leader in the clean energy sector.
