Bajaj Auto is developing a completely new electric motorcycle platform that will cover everything from entry-level commuter bikes to high-performance models.

India’s leading two-wheeler manufacturer, Bajaj Auto, is gearing up for a major push in the electric motorcycle segment. The company has confirmed that it is working on an all-new electric motorcycle platform, developed entirely in-house, as part of what Executive Director Rakesh Sharma described as a “vigorous R&D push.”

This new platform will cater to multiple categories — from daily commuter bikes to high-performance motorcycles — marking the next phase in Bajaj Auto’s electric vehicle (EV) strategy. Sharma said the company wants to be ready for the market’s inflection point rather than be caught unprepared when demand for electric motorcycles surges.

“We must have options for all kinds of use cases,” Sharma said. “It’s hard to predict which model will become a hit, but it’s better to take the shot than to miss the opportunity.”

Bajaj move comes amid intensifying competition in the electric two-wheeler market. Royal Enfield recently showcased its second electric prototype at EICMA 2025 in Milan, while startups like Ultraviolette, Revolt, and Oben are also strengthening their presence in the e-motorcycle space.

Currently, the electric motorcycle segment remains in its early stages, accounting for less than 1% of India’s total EV two-wheeler sales  largely due to high battery costs, limited range, and a lack of affordable mid-performance models.

Bajaj is leveraging the expertise of Chetak Technology Ltd (CTL)  the arm behind its successful e-scooter revival — to build this new motorcycle platform. The company’s approach prioritizes strategic readiness over speed, focusing on being prepared for future opportunities rather than reacting to current trends.

Industry experts believe Bajaj strengths lie in its scale, supply chain depth, and strategic partnerships with KTM and Triumph, which could help accelerate development and production readiness for electric motorcycles.

This initiative forms part of Bajaj Auto’s broader EV roadmap, which also includes expanding the Chetak scooter lineup, introducing electric three-wheelers, and developing small-format EVs for export. As Sharma summed up, “Our focus is not just on what’s needed today, but on being prepared for what comes next.”
