BYD to Launch Heavy-Duty Electric Truck in Europe

Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD is preparing to launch its first heavy-duty electric truck in Europe next year, with plans to eventually manufacture electric trucks locally in the region. Stella Li, Executive Vice President and Head of International Business at BYD, shared the company plans at the IAA trade fair in Hanover.

The company plans to offer European fleet operators an integrated service package along with its electric trucks. The package is expected to include vehicle financing, solar-powered charging infrastructure, a workshop network and mobile roadside assistance.

Local production in Europe could also help BYD reduce the impact of import tariffs on its electric trucks. European vehicle manufacturers, including Traton’s MAN brand, have called on the European Union to impose tariffs on Chinese electric trucks similar to those already applied to Chinese electric cars.

Stella Li said BYD does not support the tariffs but will have to operate under the current conditions. According to her, the impact of tariffs would be a short-term pressure as the company works towards increasing local production in Europe.

BYD is also strengthening its passenger EV manufacturing footprint in Europe. The company is building a new factory in Szeged, Hungary, where mass production is expected to begin next year. BYD aims to increase local production and strengthen its position in the European automotive market.
