Delhi Government’s Directorate of Education (DoE) has taken a major step to strengthen students’ academics and reduce their learning gaps.

The Directorate has instructed all government schools to conduct special remedial classes for students of Classes 9, 10 and 12 during the summer vacation. The initiative aims to strengthen students’ basic understanding, improve performance in weak subjects and help them prepare better for the upcoming academic session and board examinations.

According to the circular issued by the School Branch of the Directorate of Education, summer vacations in government schools will continue from May 11 to June 30, 2026. However, during this period, special remedial classes for students of Classes 9, 10 and 12 will be conducted from May 11 to May 23, 2026. These classes will be held regularly except on Sundays. The primary objective is to provide additional academic support to students who need extra guidance in studies.

Special Focus on Science and Mathematics

As per the circular, special emphasis will be given to Science and Mathematics subjects for students of Classes 9 and 10. However, schools have been given the flexibility to include additional subjects depending on students’ academic needs, examination results and teacher availability.

For Class 12 students, the subjects for remedial teaching will be decided by the respective Heads of School based on students’ academic performance and learning requirements. The Education Department stated that these classes are designed to strengthen students’ concepts and improve their overall learning abilities.

Classes to be Conducted in Three Daily Periods

The remedial classes will be conducted in three periods every day. Student classes will run from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM, while teachers will remain on duty from 7:20 AM to 11:00 AM. Each period will be one hour long.

The first period will run from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM, the second from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM and the third from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. In double-shift schools, the classes will be organised separately in different wings to ensure that regular school operations are not disrupted.

Strict Guidelines for Uniform and Attendance

The Directorate of Education has made it mandatory for students to attend these classes in proper school uniform. In addition, online attendance records for all participating students will be maintained.

Furthermore, parents will have to provide a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for students attending these summer remedial classes. Schools have also been instructed to prepare the remedial class timetable before the beginning of summer vacation and submit it to the concerned Deputy Director of Education (Zone).

Special Attention on Academically Weak Students

The circular also states that schools must identify students who require additional academic support. Such students will be specially encouraged to attend the remedial sessions. Schools have been directed to communicate with students and parents through all available channels to ensure maximum participation and awareness regarding these classes.

Education Experts Called It a Positive Step

Education experts and teachers believe that this initiative could become an important step toward improving the quality of education in government schools.

According to senior education experts, the learning gap among students increased significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in subjects like Mathematics and Science. In such a situation, remedial classes can help students through additional practice, personal guidance and better conceptual understanding.

Some teachers also said that many students are often unable to clear their doubts during regular classroom teaching. Remedial classes will provide them an opportunity to learn in smaller groups and work on their weaknesses more effectively. This is also expected to boost students’ confidence levels.

Education analysts believe that for better board examination performance, merely completing the syllabus is not enough. Deep conceptual understanding and regular practice are equally important. The DOE initiative is seen as a step in that direction.

A Major Step Towards Improving Education Quality

Experts believe that if implemented effectively, this initiative will not only improve students’ examination performance but also strengthen the overall quality of foundational education in government schools.

The move also reflects the Delhi Government’s larger vision of promoting concept-based learning instead of only exam-oriented education. In the coming years, such remedial initiatives could play a major role in improving students’ academic growth, confidence and overall learning outcomes.
