Maharashtra has taken a major step towards making school education more digital and technology-driven. The state's School Education Department has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Google for Education, under which more than 400,000 teachers across the state will receive training in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies over the next 18 months.
The initiative aims to equip teachers with modern technological skills and promote AI-enabled teaching practices in schools. Education experts believe that familiarizing teachers with emerging technologies is essential to ensuring quality education in an increasingly digital world.
Teachers to Be Equipped with Future-Ready Skills
The agreement was signed in the presence of School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse, who stated that technology is playing an increasingly important role in the education system and that preparing teachers for this transformation has become a necessity.
He explained that under the programme, selected master trainers will first undergo specialized training. These trainers will then provide training to teachers across the state through the Google AI Educator Series. This cascading model is designed to ensure that the benefits of the programme reach every district and school in Maharashtra.
Bhuse also emphasized that the entire programme will be implemented free of cost by Google, ensuring that there is no additional financial burden on the state government.
Government and Aided Schools to Benefit
Minister of State for School Education Pankaj Bhoyar said that the partnership will enable teachers in government-run and aided schools to access world-class training in AI and digital technologies.
He added that the training content will be available in Marathi, Hindi and English, making it accessible to teachers from different regions of the state. This multilingual approach is expected to support the wider adoption of digital education and technology-based teaching practices.
Supporting the Goals of the National Education Policy 2020
The initiative has been designed in alignment with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which places strong emphasis on technology-enabled learning, digital literacy and continuous professional development of teachers.
According to education experts, the effective use of AI and digital tools can help teachers create more interactive, personalized, and engaging learning experiences for students. This can improve classroom participation and enhance learning outcomes.
A Major Step Towards AI-Powered Education
Artificial Intelligence has increasingly become a transformative force in the education sector in recent years. AI-powered tools can personalize learning experiences, provide adaptive educational content and help teachers better understand students’ learning needs.
Through this programme, teachers will gain exposure to AI tools, digital content creation, smart classroom technologies and modern teaching methodologies. This knowledge will enable them to prepare students more effectively for the demands of the future workforce and a technology-driven society.
The initiative is also expected to encourage innovation in classroom teaching and help schools adopt more efficient and data-driven educational practices.
Focus on Digital Safety and Government Oversight
Dadaji Bhuse clarified that digital safety will remain a top priority throughout the programme. He noted that the Maharashtra government will retain oversight of the entire process and ensure adequate safeguards for teachers participating in the training.
As digital learning expands, issues such as cybersecurity, data privacy and responsible technology use have become increasingly important. Therefore, these aspects are also expected to be incorporated into the training framework.
A New Chapter in Educational Transformation
Educationists believe that this initiative will accelerate digital transformation across Maharashtra’s school system. Beyond improving teachers’ technological capabilities, it is expected to provide students with a more modern, innovation-driven and technology-enabled learning environment.
With more than 400,000 teachers set to receive AI and digital technology training, the programme is being viewed as one of the largest teacher capacity-building initiatives of its kind in India. In the years ahead, it could serve as a model for other states and contribute significantly to advancing technology-driven education across the country.
