The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has once again strengthened India’s reputation in global higher education. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, IIT Delhi climbed five places to secure the 118th position worldwide, retaining its status as the highest-ranked Indian institution.
According to the QS World University Rankings 2027 released on June 18, IIT Delhi improved from 123rd place last year to 118th place this year. Meanwhile, IIT Bombay secured the 134th position globally, making it the second-highest-ranked Indian institution. According to IIT Delhi, this achievement matches one of the highest global rankings ever attained by an Indian institution in QS rankings and reflects the growing international recognition, research strength and academic quality of Indian higher education institutions.
Strong Performance in Employability and Career Outcomes
Several key indicators contributed to IIT Delhi’s improved performance. The institute’s Employer Reputation ranking rose by 11 places to 39th globally. This indicator measures how employers worldwide perceive graduates from an institution and their readiness for the workforce.
In addition, IIT Delhi recorded a remarkable jump of 60 positions in the Employment Outcomes category, which evaluates graduate employability, leadership development and career success. The improvement highlights the strong standing of IIT Delhi graduates in the global job market.
Growing Global Recognition for Research and Innovation
The institute also improved by 26 positions in the Citations per Faculty indicator, which measures the quality and impact of scientific research produced by universities. A higher number of citations reflects stronger global recognition and influence of the institution’s research output.
Experts believe that IIT Delhi’s growing research productivity, industry collaborations and focus on innovation have significantly strengthened its international reputation. The institute’s research initiatives in areas such as artificial intelligence, energy, healthcare, communications and advanced engineering continue to make important contributions globally.
Focus on World-Class Education
Commenting on the rankings, Professor Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean (Planning) and Head of the Ranking Cell at IIT Delhi, said that the institute remains committed to providing world-class and affordable technological education. He noted that IIT Delhi continues to work toward becoming a preferred destination for students and researchers from around the world.
He added that the institute’s revamped curriculum, modern infrastructure, advanced laboratories and growing international collaborations are expected to further enhance its quality and impact in the coming years. According to him, rankings are not the institute’s objective but rather the outcome of sustained efforts toward excellence.
A Leap of 79 Places in Four Years
IIT Delhi has demonstrated impressive progress over the last four years. The institute was ranked 197th in the QS World University Rankings 2024 and has now reached 118th position in 2027, marking a significant improvement of 79 places during this period.
Excellent Performance in Engineering Disciplines
Earlier this year, in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, IIT Delhi also recorded strong performances across several disciplines. Subjects such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering were ranked among the top 50 globally.
Furthermore, IIT Delhi secured the 36th position worldwide in the Engineering and Technology category, maintaining its status as India’s highest-ranked institution in this discipline.
Positive Signal for Indian Higher Education
Education experts believe that IIT Delhi’s achievement is not just a success for one institution but a reflection of the growing global competitiveness of India’s higher education system. Through stronger research output, industry partnerships, employability-focused education and international collaborations, Indian institutions are steadily strengthening their presence on the global stage.
The continued strong performance of institutions such as IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay is playing a crucial role in positioning India as a global hub for education, research and innovation. This achievement is being seen as an encouraging sign for students, researchers and the broader education sector in the country.
