Private equity and venture capital investments in India reached USD 8.02 billion in October 2026, the highest monthly total in over four years, according to data from Venture Intelligence. A single transaction accounted for about 70% of the value: Canada-based Fairfax Financial Holdings’ purchase of a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank for INR 52,878 crore (USD 5.6 billion).
Investors closed 106 deals during the month, fewer than the 125 deals worth USD 6.1 billion in September and the 136 deals in October 2025. Separately, EY-IVCA put third-quarter 2026 investments at USD 17.1 billion, attributing growth to infrastructure and healthcare rather than any single deal.
Fairfax is buying the stake from the government and Life Insurance Corporation of India after a two-stage competitive bidding process. After the deal, the government will hold 15% of IDBI Bank and LIC 19%. It is the biggest foreign investment in India’s financial services sector and the bank is India’s sixth-largest private lender by assets.
The deal needs approval from the Reserve Bank of India.
A key challenge is Fairfax’s existing 40% stake in CSB Bank. It will have to merge or exit that holding within two years of signing the share purchase agreement. IDBI Bank shares fell about 7.5% after the announcement. Investors will track regulatory approvals, how Fairfax resolves the CSB overlap and any plans to integrate other Fairfax financial assets into IDBI Bank.
