Japan’s Omron is ramping up manufacturing in India, aligning with the country’s push to become a manufacturing and exports hub for global corporations. Omron Healthcare, its medical-device unit, opened its first Indian factory near Chennai. Operated by OMRON Healthcare Manufacturing India Pvt. Ltd. on a 24,000 sq m site.
The plant began operations in November 2025 with a single line for the domestic market and has since added four more. Omron Healthcare is targeting annual capacity of about 3 million home blood pressure monitors by 2028, a tenfold increase, which could rise to 3.5 million with three shifts. It plans to export to Europe and Africa with shipments to Europe possible from 2027 and to reduce reliance on Vietnam, from where most components are still imported.
More than 300 million people in India have hypertension, while blood pressure monitor penetration is below 5%, according to Omron Healthcare President Ayumu Okada. Omron holds about 40% of the market.
India is also part of Omron’s bid to restart revenue growth after three straight years of falling sales. The company has been present in India for three decades but has done little manufacturing there. CEO Junta Tsujinaga declined to give specifics on planned investments, saying expansion will be done in steps. Omron also sees potential in factory automation with an R&D centre in Bengaluru and in India’s semiconductor sector.
“India is not only for the local business, but also it should be a global business,” said Junta Tsujinaga, CEO, Omron.
