India Set to Become a Global Education Hub; Three Foreign Universities Receive Approval to Establish Campuses in India
In a significant step towards transforming India into a global education hub, the Government of India has granted approval to three prestigious foreign universities to establish campuses in the country.

In the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the University of Bristol, the University of York and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) were awarded Letters of Permission to set up their campuses in India.

According to the Ministry of Education, this initiative marks an important milestone in advancing the internationalization vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The objective is to provide Indian students with access to world-class education within the country and position India as a leading global center for higher education and research.

The approval letters were handed over by Dr. Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education and Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). On the occasion, Michelle Jones, Executive Dean and Director of the University of Bristol, Professor Charlie Jeffery, Vice-Chancellor of the University of York and Professor Sarah Maddison, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Student Experience) at UNSW, received the approval letters on behalf of their institutions.

The event was attended by senior representatives from the British High Commission, Australian High Commission, British Council, the Ministry of Education, the UGC and the participating universities.

Addressing the gathering, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated that the arrival of these universities in India is not merely about opening new campuses but also about creating a significant opportunity to connect India's higher education system with the global academic ecosystem. He emphasized that the initiative would strengthen quality education, international academic partnerships and research collaboration.

Campuses to Be Established in Mumbai and Bengaluru

Under the approvals granted by the government, the University of Bristol and the University of York will establish their campuses in Mumbai, while the University of New South Wales will set up its campus in Bengaluru. Both cities are recognized as major centers of knowledge, technology and innovation. Bengaluru in particular is globally known as the "Silicon Valley of the East."

These campuses will provide students with access to internationally recognized curricula, global faculty, and modern teaching methodologies. As a result, students will be able to pursue high-quality international education without having to travel abroad.

Courses to Be Offered

The University of Bristol's Mumbai campus will offer programs in areas such as Immersive Arts, Data Science, Finance, Economics, Business Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The University of York's Mumbai campus will provide academic programs in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Business, Economics, Management and Creative Industries.

Meanwhile, the University of New South Wales' Bengaluru campus is scheduled to commence operations in August 2026 at Manyata Business Park. The campus will offer programs in Business, Computer Science and Cybersecurity. In addition, the university will promote research collaboration with India in areas such as renewable energy, healthcare, transportation, digital technology and education.

Benefits for Students and Research

Experts believe that the presence of foreign universities in India will enable students to earn globally recognized degrees and gain international academic exposure without leaving the country. It is also expected to accelerate joint research projects, innovation initiatives and industry-academia collaboration.

The initiative is likely to further strengthen educational ties between India and the United Kingdom as well as India and Australia, while enhancing the global reputation of Indian higher education.

Boost to the Goals of NEP 2020

This initiative forms part of the broader internationalization agenda of NEP 2020, which aims to align Indian higher education with global standards and establish India as a preferred destination for higher learning.

The regulatory framework developed by the UGC provides foreign universities with a transparent, streamlined, and time-bound process for establishing campuses in India. At the same time, it ensures institutional autonomy, quality assurance and adherence to global academic standards.

The Ministry of Education believes that the arrival of these universities will expand access to international education, encourage academic mobility, strengthen research and innovation and help India move rapidly toward building a competitive, inclusive and future-oriented higher education system.

The approval granted to these foreign universities also reflects growing international confidence in India's education ecosystem. In the years ahead, this initiative is expected to play a crucial role in positioning India among the world's leading destinations for higher education.
