MSRDC will install eight new EV charging stations on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway by year-end to address the shortage of facilities.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will set up eight new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway by the end of this year. Currently, there are only five charging points along the 94.5-km stretch, which EV users say are insufficient given the rising number of registrations.

According to data from the Vahan portal, Maharashtra has over 5.58 lakh registered EVs, making it one of the largest EV markets in India. The expressway handles nearly 1.4 lakh vehicles daily, highlighting the gap in charging infrastructure.

A senior MSRDC official said that a study is underway to ensure the new stations are evenly distributed along the expressway. Another survey is monitoring EV traffic to forecast future demand.

To promote EV adoption, the state government has announced toll exemptions for EVs on intercity corridors such as the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Samruddhi Mahamarg, and Atal Setu. However, commuters often complain that most existing charging points are non-functional.

Officials emphasized that the new plan must be completed on time to address user concerns. They added that public-private partnerships and renewable energy sources are also being considered to make the system more sustainable.
