OpenMetal has acquired Economize, a cloud cost management platform serving engineering, finance and FinOps teams. The combined offering gives businesses a single provider to understand cloud spending, determine where workloads should run and continuously optimize infrastructure costs. The deal also marks the launch of OpenMetal Labs, a new service focused on building custom infrastructure and cost solutions for specialized business needs.
The acquisition addresses a growing challenge for infrastructure-heavy businesses: improving unit economics while working with a provider that is directly accountable for the underlying infrastructure. Many companies now operate a mix of public cloud and private infrastructure, while spending on AI and GPUs continues to take a larger share of technology budgets. Economize helps teams understand where their cloud spending goes, while OpenMetal provides private infrastructure for workloads where it can deliver a stronger cost and performance fit.
OpenMetal and Economize Combine Cloud Cost and Infrastructure Expertise
OpenMetal Co-Founder and President Todd Robinson said companies have often had to choose between a FinOps platform and an infrastructure provider that understands their cost structure. He said bringing the two businesses together creates a more integrated offering through a single accountable provider and allows OpenMetal to adapt its services around customers’ evolving infrastructure needs.
One Platform for Cloud Cost Management and Infrastructure
Businesses moving workloads to private infrastructure can use OpenMetal for a streamlined transition, while those adopting a hybrid approach can run selected workloads across private and public environments with ongoing monitoring and optimization. Customers of both OpenMetal and Economize can now access the combined portfolio through a single business relationship.
Economize Co-Founder and CEO Anirudh Murali said the company was originally built to provide greater transparency into public cloud spending. With OpenMetal, the combined business can help customers act on those insights by designing the right mix of public and private infrastructure while balancing cost and performance as workloads scale.
The new OpenMetal Labs offering is designed for infrastructure and cost challenges that cannot be addressed through standard products. Its team works directly with businesses to design and build customized solutions, bringing together expertise from both OpenMetal and Economize across infrastructure engineering, FinOps and cloud cost optimization.
OpenMetal Labs Targets Complex Infrastructure Challenges
OpenMetal has previously worked with a hosting provider that required a Ceph storage cluster optimized for a workload that standard configurations could not support. Its engineering team developed and implemented the solution in collaboration with the customer.
Economize has similarly built customized FinOps capabilities for customers requiring more advanced cost management than its standard platform could provide. In one case, an engineering team needed specialized reporting and alerts aligned with its internal approach to tracking cloud expenditure.
OpenMetal Labs brings these capabilities together under one offering, covering areas such as large-scale OpenStack and Ceph engineering, cloud infrastructure design, FinOps and real-time cloud cost anomaly detection.
