Promoting Higher Education: Approval Granted for 3 UK Universities to Open Campuses in India
Ministry Statement: Campuses of these universities will be established in Gujarat’s GIFT City, giving Indian education a global dimension.


Following Australia, three universities from England will now also start their campuses in GIFT City, Gujarat. The Ministry of Education is actively working on the mission of internationalizing education and is in continuous dialogue with foreign institutions.

So far, 19 foreign universities have received permission to establish their campuses in India, of which 3 campuses have already been operationalized.

On Monday, Study in India Edu-Diplomatic Conclave 2026 was organized in Delhi. Officials from the Ministry of Education, ambassadors, high commissioners and representatives from over 50 countries’ embassies participated in the conclave.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, “India is advancing with a focus on quality, innovation and affordable education. This is why the internationalization of education is progressing rapidly. India is also emerging as a major hub in the global economy with strong emphasis on innovation.”

He further added that initiatives such as National Education Policy 2020 and the ‘Study in India’ program are steadily increasing global options for students and researchers.

Higher Education Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi mentioned that several foreign universities have been tied up for joint and dual twinning programs.

Foreign Universities and Their Campuses

- In GIFT City, Gujarat, the campuses of the Queen’s University Belfast, Coventry University and University of Surrey (UK) will be established.

- The Liverpool University (UK) campus in Bangalore will begin academic sessions from August 2026.

- Additionally, University of Aberdeen, York University (UK), Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago (USA), University of Western Australia, Perth and a renowned design institute from Italy will also have campuses in Mumbai.

Discussions with Canadian Universities

The Ministry of Education is also in talks with top Canadian universities. In the near future, campuses of Canadian universities are expected to start in India, offering more opportunities for students and researchers.

Initiative for Internationalization of Education

This initiative will enhance quality, innovation and global exposure in India’s higher education sector. Campuses of foreign universities will provide students with world-class education, research opportunities and new avenues for learning. The Ministry of Education aims to establish India as a global hub for education, ensuring that students, researchers and institutions benefit from these initiatives.
