Gangwal had earlier contributed INR 100 crore to IIT Kanpur in 2022. At the time, the contribution supported the institute’s plans to establish a medical school on campus. The new contribution will help further the institute’s plans in medical education, research, clinical innovation and MedTech.
Other Supporters to Receive a Boost
Under the new commitment, Rakesh Gangwal will provide a matching grant of up to INR 300 crore against contributions made by other supporters. The aim is to raise additional funds from alumni, philanthropists and other supporters for IIT Kanpur’s medical project.
The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is being developed as an interdisciplinary institution that will combine IIT Kanpur’s expertise in engineering, science and technology with medical sciences. Its focus includes medical education, interdisciplinary research, futuristic medicine and MedTech innovation.
According to IIT Kanpur, the project includes a 500-bed super-speciality hospital and a proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre on the campus. These facilities are aimed at strengthening medical education, clinical research and healthcare delivery.
Bringing Medical Education and Technology Together
The IIT Kanpur project is an important step towards combining the institute’s traditional strengths in engineering and technology with medical education and research. The institute aims to bring doctors, researchers, engineers and technology experts together to develop solutions to emerging healthcare challenges.
IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal said Gangwal’s latest contribution would help accelerate the realisation of the institute’s vision for the medical school. He said interdisciplinary research and innovation combining engineering, technology and medicine have the potential to transform healthcare delivery in India.
Gangwal described his new commitment as an honour and privilege to be part of the institution. According to IIT Kanpur, his contribution will support the institute’s broader ambitions in medical education, research, healthcare and MedTech.
Overall, the initiative is an important step towards integrating IIT Kanpur’s engineering and technology-led academic model with medical sciences, clinical research and healthcare innovation.
