Renault Duster Strong Hybrid to Launch in India on October 17

Renault India is set to launch the strong-hybrid version of the new Duster in India on October 17. With the addition of the hybrid powertrain, the midsize SUV will be offered with three powertrain options, including the existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines. The company has named the new system the E-Tech Hybrid System, which, according to Renault, draws on technology and experience from its Formula 1 programme.

The Duster E-Tech hybrid system combines a 1,789cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors. One motor produces 20hp and works primarily as a generator, while the second delivers 49hp and drives the wheels. The combined system output stands at 160hp and 172Nm. The powertrain is supported by a 1.4kWh battery pack and paired with a multi-mode automatic transmission.

Renault E-Tech hybrid system differs from the technology used in the Toyota Hyryder, Maruti Grand Vitara and Maruti Victoris. While Toyota’s system uses an e-CVT and power-split device, Renault’s hybrid transmission uses fixed gear ratios and can shift between them. The system can switch between electric drive, petrol-engine drive and combined operation. The Duster also gets a larger 1.4kWh battery compared with the 0.60kWh unit used by Toyota’s hybrid system.

Like other strong hybrids, the Duster can use electric power during low-speed driving, recover energy through regenerative braking and switch off the petrol engine when it is not required. Renault claims that up to 80% of city driving can be completed in EV mode. However, actual fuel efficiency will depend on factors including traffic, driving speed, ambient temperature and road conditions.

The Duster Strong Hybrid will provide an alternative to the diesel engine, which is not offered with the new-generation model. In India, it will compete with the Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Victoris, all of which offer strong-hybrid powertrain options in the midsize SUV segment. With the addition of the E-Tech system, Renault will offer the Duster with three powertrain choices in the Indian market.
