The Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO) is taking major steps to strengthen the electric vehicle charging network across the state. As part of its new plan, a public Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) will be installed every 25–30 kilometres along national and state highways.
Restaurants, dhabas, food outlets, spaces located within 500 metres of an electrical sub-station, and government-owned land along highways are being evaluated as potential locations. According to TGREDCO Managing Director V. Anila, charging stations will also be expanded in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities at government offices, hospitals, schools, railway stations and other public spaces.
So far, around 1,500 applications have been received from private entities for setting up EVCS. The proposed locations in cities and along highways are yet to receive final approval. Currently, Telangana has more than 1,030 charging stations, including nearly 600 in Hyderabad. TGREDCO aims to increase the number of public EVCS to 6,000 by 2030 and 12,000 by 2035.
Energy Consumption Rises Fourfold
Charging energy consumption has risen significantly—from 2.60 million units (MU) in September last year to 10.15 MU in September this year. The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) contributed the highest with 7.81 MU for its electric bus fleet. However, TGSRTC’s charging stations are dedicated exclusively to buses.
Cost and Infrastructure Requirements
Setting up an EVCS requires around 650 sq. ft of space. It involves two major components: the EV charger and upstream infrastructure, which includes transformers, cables, AC distribution boxes, civil works and more.
A 60 kW charger installation costs around ₹15 lakh—₹7 lakh for the charger and ₹7 lakh for upstream infrastructure. The central government also provides subsidies for EVCS installation under the PM E-Drive scheme.
Unified App to Be Launched Soon
To make trip planning easier for EV users, the government is developing a unified mobile application that will provide information on all public charging stations across the state.
With these efforts, Telangana aims to accelerate the expansion of its EV charging network, making electric vehicles more accessible and boosting public confidence in eco-friendly mobility.
