Centre of Excellence to be Established at IIT Hyderabad with Focus on 5G/6G, AI, Quantum Technologies and Cybersecurity.

In a significant move to accelerate research, innovation and skill development in advanced communication technologies in India, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Under this partnership, an Advanced Communication Technologies Centre of Excellence (CoE) will be established at the IIT Hyderabad campus.

C-DOT, the premier telecom research and development organization under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, aims to promote indigenous research and innovation in next-generation communication technologies through this initiative. Education experts believe that this collaboration can play a crucial role in strengthening India’s position in the global telecommunications and digital technology landscape.

Boost to Research, Innovation and Skill Development

The proposed Centre of Excellence will serve as a dedicated platform for research, innovation and capacity building in advanced communication technologies. Its objective is not only to conduct cutting-edge research but also to provide students, researchers and startups with opportunities to develop practical solutions aligned with industry requirements.

The centre will focus on key areas such as wireless communication, 5G Advanced, 6G technologies, quantum communication, cybersecurity, AI-enabled networking and post-quantum security systems. This will provide students with opportunities to engage in advanced research and specialized training, which are expected to play a vital role in future employment and innovation.

Strengthening Academia-Industry Collaboration

One of the primary goals of this initiative is to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The Centre of Excellence will combine IIT Hyderabad’s academic expertise with C-DOT’s extensive experience in the telecommunications sector, helping align research projects with real-world industry needs.

Experts believe that when university research is closely connected with industry requirements, innovations can be translated into practical applications more effectively. As a result, the centre is expected to evolve into a collaborative innovation platform for students, researchers, startups and industry stakeholders.

New Opportunities for Students and Startups

The Centre of Excellence will provide students and young innovators with opportunities to participate in research-driven projects. Startups will benefit from technical guidance, industry partnerships, intellectual property (IP) support and prototype development facilities.

C-DOT has already collaborated with the IIT Hyderabad-incubated startup WAISIG for the development of 5G Open RAN solutions. Building on this experience, the new centre will offer additional support to startups and help transform innovative technologies into market-ready solutions.

Supporting India’s Digital Self-Reliance

The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s flagship programmes such as Atmanirbhar Bharat and Digital India. The Centre of Excellence aims to develop indigenous communication technologies that reduce dependence on foreign solutions and strengthen India’s technological capabilities.

The solutions developed at the centre are expected to be secure, reliable and aligned with global standards. This will contribute to strengthening India’s telecommunications infrastructure, cybersecurity ecosystem and overall digital capabilities.

C-DOT’s Fourth Centre of Excellence

The proposed facility at IIT Hyderabad will be the fourth Centre of Excellence established by C-DOT. Similar centres have already been set up at IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Roorkee. Together, these initiatives are helping build a strong nationwide research and innovation network in advanced communication technologies.

Experts Call It a Visionary Initiative

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, said that the Centre of Excellence represents a strategic step toward creating a robust innovation ecosystem for next-generation communication technologies in India. According to him, integrating academic research with real-world deployment capabilities will enable India to develop globally competitive telecom solutions.

Meanwhile, Prof. B.S. Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad, stated that the partnership will provide students, researchers and faculty members with opportunities to work on strategically important technologies and contribute to strengthening India’s technological leadership.

A Significant Step Toward India’s Technological Future

According to experts in education and technology, the collaboration between C-DOT and IIT Hyderabad is more than just the establishment of a research centre. It represents the beginning of a new era of advanced technical education, innovation and industry collaboration in India.

In the coming years, the Centre of Excellence is expected to provide world-class opportunities for students, researchers and startups while helping India strengthen its position on the global telecommunications innovation map.
