The Punjab government has launched a structured Skill Development Programme for children residing in observation homes and special homes across the state. The initiative aims to equip children with employment-oriented skills, enabling them to become self-reliant and build a brighter future.
The programme was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Observation Home for Boys in Faridkot. Speaking at the launch, Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said that the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to providing children under institutional care with better opportunities through education and skill training.
She informed that in the first phase of the programme, 211 out of the 420 children residing in four child care institutions across the state will receive training in various employment-oriented vocational trades. The training will help children acquire practical skills that can support future employment and self-employment opportunities.
Special Focus on Employment-Oriented Training
Dr Baljit Kaur emphasized that along with formal education, practical and technical skills are essential for the overall development of children. She said that skill-based training would help boost their confidence and enable them to integrate into mainstream society more effectively.
She further noted that the importance of skill-based education is increasing in a rapidly changing job market. Therefore, providing modern and relevant skills to children living in institutional care has become a necessity.
The minister added that under the programme, children will be trained in different trades based on their interests and abilities, helping them make informed career choices in the future.
Integrating Education and Skills
Dr Kaur said that the Punjab government is prioritizing the rehabilitation, education and empowerment of children. The programme has been launched with the objective of ensuring equal opportunities for children under institutional care and preparing them for a dignified and independent life.
The state government believes that the combination of education and skill development can bring positive changes in the lives of children. The initiative is expected not only to improve their employability but also to help them become responsible and self-sufficient citizens.
The government also plans to expand the programme in the coming years to benefit a larger number of children and provide them with greater opportunities for personal and professional growth.
A Significant Step Towards Child Empowerment
Experts in the fields of education and child development believe that such skill development programmes equip children with essential life skills and play a vital role in their social and economic empowerment. For children living in observation and special homes, these initiatives can serve as a pathway to increased confidence, career development and successful reintegration into society.
The Punjab government’s initiative is being regarded as an important step in the areas of child protection, skill education and inclusive development, helping children move toward a brighter future and a self-reliant life.
