Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in several key areas of the city, including Anna Nagar, T Nagar, Nungambakkam, Adyar and Besant Nagar. Each location will be equipped with two charging points.
The charging stations will be set up alongside parking facilities, allowing motorists to charge their vehicles while parked. According to GCC Chief Engineer B. Shankaravelu, the initiative will benefit not only private EV owners but also app-based taxi operators, logistics providers and delivery partners who increasingly rely on electric two-wheelers and cars.
The proposal for installing EV charging stations was earlier raised by Ward 104 councillor T. V. Shemmozhi during a council meeting, highlighting the growing demand for charging infrastructure as more residents switch to electric vehicles. She also suggested providing free charging stations, particularly in residential areas.
Following the request, Chennai Mayor R. Priya announced that EV charging stations would be installed at more than 15 locations across the city. The project will be implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model as part of a revamped Smart Parking Management System.
Officials said the chargers will be integrated with designated parking zones, allowing users to access both parking and charging facilities simultaneously. Work on the project is expected to begin by the end of this year, offering greater convenience for EV users across the city.
