Cygni Energy, an energy storage technology and manufacturing company in India, and Indus Towers, a telecom tower infrastructure company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration on sourcing energy storage solutions for telecom infrastructure in India. The partnership aims to address the growing energy requirements of the telecom sector through advanced energy storage solutions.
Under the MoU, the companies will evaluate the possibility of establishing up to 1.5 GWh of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing capacity for telecom infrastructure. They will also explore advanced battery technologies for telecom applications, with the aim of improving network reliability, enhancing energy efficiency and supporting more sustainable telecom operations.
Venkat Rajaraman, Founder and CEO of Cygni Energy, said the initiative goes beyond battery supply and focuses on developing manufacturing capacity and technology capabilities to meet the evolving energy needs of telecom infrastructure. He said the company plans to develop up to 2 GWh of capacity and build a portfolio that can expand from 100Ah solutions to higher-capacity 314Ah systems and emerging battery technologies.
Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor at IIT Madras and Chairman of ITEL Foundation, said collaboration among users, startups, manufacturers and technology institutions can support the development and adoption of energy storage solutions in India. He added that the telecom sector provides an important application area for advancing battery technologies and manufacturing capabilities.
As India continues to strengthen its digital and energy infrastructure, collaborations between technology developers, infrastructure providers and manufacturers are expected to support domestic innovation, strengthen supply-chain resilience and accelerate the adoption of next-generation energy storage solutions.
