Edtech Company upGrad’s Revenue Rises 7.5%, Net Loss Declines to Rs 131 Crore in FY26
upGrad, an edtech company operating in the higher education and skill development segments, reported an improvement in its financial performance in FY26.

The company’s consolidated net loss declined to Rs 131 crore from Rs 274 crore in the previous financial year. During the same period, its revenue from operations increased 7.5% to Rs 1,687 crore.

The revenue and net loss figures are based on the company’s audited consolidated financial statements filed with the Registrar of Companies (RoC). In FY25, the company had reported revenue from operations of Rs 1,569 crore. This represents an increase of Rs 118 crore in revenue over the year.

Lower Expenses Help Improve Financial Performance

A reduction in expenses was a key factor behind upGrad’s improved financial performance. The company’s net loss declined by Rs 143 crore year-on-year, marking a reduction of approximately 52% compared with the previous financial year. This indicates that the company made progress in reducing its financial losses despite relatively modest revenue growth.

However, the decline in losses should not be interpreted as the company returning to profitability. upGrad continued to report a net loss of Rs 131 crore in FY26. A detailed assessment of its profitability would also require an examination of operating costs, employee expenses, marketing expenditure and other financial items.

Company Focuses on Higher Education and Skill Development

Led by Ronnie Screwvala, upGrad operates in higher education, online learning and professional skill development. The company’s business model focuses on providing students and working professionals with opportunities to pursue higher education and acquire career-oriented skills.

Amid growing demand for digital learning and career-focused education in India, controlling operating costs alongside revenue growth has become important for edtech companies. Businesses in the sector need to invest in reaching learners, marketing, technology and academic partnerships. As a result, balancing revenue growth with expenditure can have a significant impact on financial performance.

Why These Figures Matter for the Edtech Sector

upGrad’s FY26 results indicate that the company increased its revenue while reducing its net loss. The 7.5% growth in revenue from operations reflects business expansion, while the approximately 52% decline in net loss points to an improvement in its financial performance.

However, assessing the company’s long-term financial position will require monitoring revenue growth, expense management and its ability to achieve net profitability in the coming financial years.
