Ladakh’s First Medical College Approved, Classes to Begin in 2027-28
Following the central government’s approval, the medical college in Leh will begin operations in the academic year 2027-28. This will provide students in Ladakh with new opportunities to pursue medical education and clinical training locally.

The central government has approved the operationalisation of Ladakh’s first Government Medical College. Located in Leh, the medical college will begin operations in the academic year 2027–28. This will give students in the Union Territory an opportunity to pursue medical education in their own region. The initiative is also expected to help strengthen clinical training facilities and healthcare services in Ladakh.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) granted the approval following the intervention of Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. The decision has also cleared the way for recruiting the faculty and support staff required for the medical college. Recruitment against 103 sanctioned regular posts will be carried out in phases according to academic requirements.

Local Students to Get More Opportunities for Medical Education

There had been a long-standing demand for a Government Medical College in Ladakh. The launch of this institution could reduce local students’ dependence on other states for medical education. In addition, the availability of medical education and clinical training is expected to support the development of healthcare services in the region.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena described the approval as an important milestone for Ladakh. He said the medical college would provide young people with greater opportunities to access quality medical education closer to home. He also said the Ladakh Administration would ensure the necessary arrangements to welcome the first batch of students in the academic year 2027–28.

Recruitment to Be Conducted in Phases for 103 Posts

To initiate the recruitment of faculty and support staff for the medical college, the Lieutenant Governor wrote to Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J. P. Nadda on July 13, 2026. He requested a one-time relaxation in the condition requiring nearly 80% completion of infrastructure before recruitment could begin.

The request aimed to ensure the availability of the required human resources before academic activities commence, while construction of the college’s permanent academic infrastructure continues. The ministry agreed to the request and stated that recruitment against the 103 sanctioned posts would be carried out in phases from the 2027-28 academic year, based on the academic requirements identified by the Union Territory Administration.

The administration will also ensure that all posts are filled on a regular basis in accordance with the approved recruitment rules. The medical college will shift to its permanent campus once the required facilities are completed.

Interim Facilities Arranged for the First Batch of Students

Interim arrangements have been made to operate the college until construction of its permanent infrastructure is completed. Two newly constructed buildings have been identified for use as the academic block and students’ hostel.

In addition, the existing 200-bedded SNM Hospital will support clinical training for the first batch of MBBS students. The hospital has around 60 experienced doctors who can help provide practical medical training to students.

These interim facilities will be used temporarily in accordance with the prescribed conditions. They will remain in use until the permanent campus is ready, helping the administration move forward with plans to begin academic activities.

Strengthening Medical Education and Healthcare Services

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda for their support in strengthening medical education and healthcare services in Ladakh. He said the administration aims to build a team according to academic requirements and complete the necessary arrangements to begin operations in 2027-28.

The launch of Ladakh’s first Government Medical College will expand access to medical education in the region. It could also mark an important step towards developing locally trained medical professionals and strengthening healthcare capacity over the long term.
