According to the Ipsos-GIIA Global Infrastructure Index 2026, 44% of Indians identified EV charging infrastructure as a major national investment priority, highlighting the growing need for electric mobility and urban transport infrastructure.

The growing adoption of electric vehicles in India is also increasing demand for better EV charging infrastructure. According to the Ipsos-GIIA Global Infrastructure Index 2026, 44% of Indians identified EV charging stations as one of the country’s key investment priorities. The figure is more than twice the global country average of 21%.

The survey also found that 44% of Indian respondents prioritised the development and maintenance of local road networks. Meanwhile, 33% identified major highways and motorways as a priority. The findings indicate that citizens are looking for investment not only in large infrastructure projects but also in infrastructure used in their daily lives.

Overall, 69% of Indians said they were satisfied with the country’s national infrastructure. India ranked second globally on this measure, behind Singapore at 74%, and was significantly ahead of the global average of 38%.

At the same time, respondents highlighted the importance of maintaining existing infrastructure. Around 79% of Indians agreed that repairing and maintaining existing infrastructure is as important as building new projects.

Suresh Ramalingam, CEO of Ipsos India, said that citizens’ priorities closely align with India’s long-term development agenda. He noted that investments in water infrastructure, clean energy and digital infrastructure are receiving strong public support. Citizens expect policymakers to focus on maintaining existing infrastructure while continuing to develop new assets.

The survey also showed strong support for private-sector participation in infrastructure development. Around 80% of Indian respondents said they were comfortable with private companies investing in infrastructure to deliver necessary improvements. This was higher than the global average of 70%.

In addition, 64% of Indians supported higher infrastructure spending even if it required increased taxes or consumer fees. The corresponding global average stood at 39%.

The survey was conducted between April 24 and May 8, 2026, across 29 countries and included 21,521 adults. In India, the survey primarily covered urban and digitally connected respondents. The strong preference for EV charging infrastructure reflects the country’s growing electric mobility adoption and increasing urban transportation needs.
