Ahead of the festive season, Flipkart said it has created more than 2.5 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities. This also includes gig jobs. Around 75,000 of these opportunities will be for people entering India’s workforce for the first time.
These opportunities will span more than 7,000 Ekart facilities, including fulfilment centres, sortation hubs and last-mile delivery operations. Last-mile delivery will account for around 60% of the new roles, supported by more than 900 festive delivery hubs and growing demand from Tier II and Tier III markets. According to the company, women account for more than 20% of Flipkart’s supply chain workforce.
Skill Training to Create More Employment Opportunities for Youth
“Commerce at scale creates opportunities at scale across jobs, livelihoods and entrepreneurship,” said Rajneesh Kumar, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Flipkart Group. He said the 75,000 people entering the workforce for the first time are part of a broader ecosystem emerging around digital commerce.
Since its launch two years ago, Flipkart Minutes has expanded its quick-commerce reach to 1,200 micro-fulfilment centres across more than 150 cities. During this period, the company has recorded four-fold year-on-year growth.
Flipkart said the platform has generated more than 4 lakh direct and indirect jobs since inception. Around 60% of customers return to shop on Minutes.
Digital Commerce in Smaller Cities Creating New Learning Opportunities
Tier II and smaller cities are becoming key growth drivers. The customer base in cities such as Ambala, Barabanki, Bhagalpur, Durgapur, Kanpur, Roorkee, Siliguri, Salem and Tirupur has grown nearly 25-fold year-on-year.
Beyond essential products, the scope of customer purchases is also expanding. Consumers are purchasing Korean noodles, sauces, ready-to-eat meals, premium skincare and personal-care products. Gen Z is the fastest-growing customer segment. Its customer base has grown nearly five-fold over the past year and accounts for more than 45% of total orders across categories including beauty, electronics, gaming, wearables, fragrances, health, nutrition and grooming.
“In the last two years, Flipkart Minutes has evolved from a convenience-based service into a broader shopping channel,” said Kunal Gupta, Senior Vice President and Head of Flipkart Minutes. He said the expanding network would help bring the service to more customers while creating new opportunities for brands, farmers and local businesses.
Supply Chain Training to Provide Practical Experience to Students and Youth
Ahead of the festive season, Flipkart’s Supply Chain Operations Academy (SCOA) has awarded nearly 10,000 certifications. According to the company, the programme provides hands-on training in supply chain operations and is conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, NCVET and ITI Kalyani.
“This year, we are significantly expanding our fulfilment and last-mile network to meet rising customer demand, while also creating employment opportunities across the country,” said Hemant Badri, Senior Vice President, Supply Chain, Customer Experience and Re-Commerce, Flipkart Group.
