Hindustan Zinc Limited has launched an electric bus fleet at its Debari zinc smelter unit in Udaipur, marking the beginning of a larger plan to deploy 41 such buses across its operations in Rajasthan. The initiative is aimed at reducing Scope 3 emissions associated with employee transportation.
The fleet has been rolled out in partnership with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility Pvt. Ltd.. The company estimates that the transition from diesel to electric buses will help avoid more than 11,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions over the contract period.
The Debari rollout is part of Hindustan Zinc’s broader strategy to integrate low-emission transport systems across its sites, with additional buses to be introduced in phases. CEO Arun Misra said the move aligns with the company’s decarbonisation goals and its target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.
The initiative also supports the company’s commitments under the Science Based Targets initiative and its membership in the International Council on Mining and Metals.
Hindustan Zinc added that it is increasing the share of renewable energy in its power mix, currently at around 18%, and has signed a 530 MW round-the-clock renewable energy supply agreement expected to meet over 70% of its total power requirement. Initial supply under this agreement has already commenced.
The company was ranked the top metals and mining firm in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025. A part of the Vedanta Group, Hindustan Zinc is a leading zinc producer and among the top global silver producers, supplying to over 40 countries.
