Hyundai Motor India plans to transform Tamil Nadu into its flagship EV manufacturing hub through investments in localisation, supplier expansion, charging infrastructure, and workforce development.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has announced plans to establish Tamil Nadu as its flagship electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing hub in India, alongside unveiling new investments in localisation, supply chain expansion, and workforce development initiatives across the state.

The company said it will launch two new models from its Chennai manufacturing facility this year, including its first mass-market dedicated EV. The move is part of Hyundai’s broader strategy to strengthen its electric mobility portfolio and accelerate EV adoption in the Indian market.

Tarun Garg, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HMIL, said the company is focused not only on increasing EV localisation but also on building a future-ready workforce capable of supporting next-generation automotive technologies.

Hyundai has already established a battery sub-assembly facility for EV powertrains in Tamil Nadu and is expanding localisation efforts for power electronics and other critical EV components. The company currently achieves around 82% localisation and aims to increase this figure to 90% over the next five to six years.

As part of its supplier ecosystem expansion strategy, Hyundai plans to increase procurement from Tamil Nadu-based suppliers by approximately ₹4,000 crore over the next five to six years. The initiative is expected to create nearly 2,000 additional jobs in the state.

To support skill development, Hyundai has expanded its collaboration with the Government of Tamil Nadu. Scheduled to commence operations in December 2027, the programme will partner with Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), polytechnics, and engineering colleges to provide training in EVs, hydrogen mobility, robotics, automation, AI-enabled manufacturing, and smart manufacturing technologies.

On the charging infrastructure front, HMIL currently operates 39 DC fast-charging stations with 78 charging points across Tamil Nadu. The company plans to expand the network further across major cities and highways over the next two to three years.

Hyundai also reaffirmed its commitment to invest more than ₹26,000 crore in Tamil Nadu between 2023 and 2032. The investment forms part of the company’s broader ₹45,000 crore India investment plan, focusing on manufacturing expansion, localisation, and advanced mobility technologies.
