IIM Bangalore to Launch Its First Overseas Campus in Indonesia, Project to Roll Out in Two Phases
In a major step towards strengthening the global presence of Indian higher education, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore will establish its first international campus in Indonesia.

According to the Ministry of Education, this initiative marks a significant milestone in the global expansion of India's premier educational institutions and aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Prime Minister Modi made the announcement during his visit to Indonesia in a joint statement with President Prabowo Subianto. He said that the campus would not only serve students from Indonesia but would also emerge as a major centre for high-quality management education for young people across the ASEAN region. The Prime Minister also highlighted that the initiative would strengthen cooperation between India and Indonesia in education, skill development and innovation, while further enhancing collaboration in areas such as space, science and technology.

According to the Ministry of Education, IIM Bangalore will implement the project in two phases. During the first phase, high-quality Executive Education Programmes will be launched for senior government officials, industry leaders, entrepreneurs and public sector professionals. These programmes are designed to equip working professionals with leadership, innovation, and modern management skills required to address the challenges of a rapidly evolving global economy and business environment.

Following the successful completion of the first phase, the second phase will introduce regular degree-granting management programmes. For this purpose, a formal agreement will be signed between IIM Bangalore and the management and development authority of the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Indonesia. This collaboration is also expected to strengthen long-term academic and research partnerships between the two countries.

International Campus to Be Developed in Two Phases

The proposed international campus will be established at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang, Indonesia. While the campus is primarily being developed to cater to Indonesian students, it is also expected to attract learners, researchers and professionals from other Southeast Asian countries. The initiative aims to make India's world-class management education more accessible at the international level.

Participants enrolled at the Indonesia campus will also have the opportunity to undertake short-term academic immersion programmes at the IIM Bangalore campus in India. During these visits, they will gain first-hand exposure to India's startup ecosystem, innovation culture, industry, digital economy and business environment. This experience is expected to help students develop a broader global perspective while understanding India's rapidly evolving economic landscape.

According to the Ministry of Education, the curriculum at the new campus will be designed to address the needs of the modern global economy and industry. Special emphasis will be placed on subjects such as Global Supply Chains, Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Climate Change, Sustainability and Healthcare Management. Students will also have opportunities to interact with leading industry experts, internationally renowned academicians and global business leaders.

The initiative is expected to further strengthen the strategic and diplomatic partnership between India and Indonesia. Experts believe that collaboration in higher education will create new opportunities for knowledge exchange, research, skill development and human resource development. It is also expected to position Indonesia as a regional hub for quality management education while reinforcing India's role as a trusted partner in education and leadership development for countries of the Global South.

India's Growing Global Footprint in Higher Education

The international expansion of India's leading educational institutions has been gaining momentum in recent years. Earlier, IIM Ahmedabad established a campus in Dubai, IIT Delhi launched its international campus in Abu Dhabi and IIT Madras opened a campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The expansion of IIM Bangalore into Indonesia is being viewed as another significant milestone that reflects the growing global reputation of Indian higher education.

The initiative also supports the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages leading Indian higher education institutions to establish a global presence, strengthen international collaborations and improve access to world-class education. It is expected to help Indian institutions attract international students, expand global research partnerships and accelerate the internationalisation of Indian higher education.

Education experts believe that the IIM Bangalore Indonesia campus is much more than a new academic institution. It represents a significant step in advancing India's knowledge-based diplomacy, global academic leadership and education exports. The initiative is expected to strengthen the international standing of Indian management education while positioning India as a leading global provider of high-quality, affordable and innovation-driven education.
