In a major step toward strengthening its national and global presence in management education, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur has unveiled an ambitious expansion plan for the next five years. The institute aims not only to broaden its academic footprint across India but also to secure a place among the world’s top 100 business schools and the top 10 business schools in Asia. As part of this vision, the Government of Maharashtra has allotted 70 acres of land in Moshi, Pune, for the institute’s new fully developed campus on a symbolic lease of ₹1.
A State-of-the-Art Management Campus in Pune
IIM Nagpur Director Prof. Bhimaraya Metri said that the proposed Pune campus marks the first major step in the institute’s multi-campus strategy. He clarified that it will not be merely an extension centre but a fully developed academic campus. Once operational, IIM Nagpur will become one of the few IIMs in the country to have two fully developed campuses.
Prof. Metri expressed gratitude to the Maharashtra Government, the Chief Minister and the Revenue Department, noting that the land, valued at approximately ₹180 crore, has been allotted on a nominal lease of ₹1 to support the expansion of higher education.
Strategic Roadmap for 2026–2031
The institute has also unveiled its Strategic Roadmap 2026-2031, which aims to transform IIM Nagpur into a globally respected, multi-campus business school.
The roadmap places strong emphasis on Executive Education, Artificial Intelligence (AI), India-centric research, energy and climate leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation and regional development. Through education, research and industry collaboration, the institute seeks to make a meaningful contribution to India's economic and social development.
Special Focus on AI and Industry-Oriented Education
Over the coming years, IIM Nagpur plans to integrate Artificial Intelligence into its management education ecosystem. Students will benefit from AI-enabled teaching methodologies, future-ready academic programmes and cutting-edge learning opportunities through the MARVEL AI Research & Development Centre.
The institute also plans to design industry-driven curricula that prepare students to address real-world business challenges while developing leadership skills required for the future.
New Academic Programmes at the Pune Campus
The proposed Pune campus will introduce specialised programmes focused on emerging fields such as Manufacturing, Industry 4.0, Digital Technologies, Artificial Intelligence and IT Management.
The institute is planning to launch an Integrated BBA-MBA programme and is also exploring a five-year B.Tech-MBA programme in collaboration with leading IITs. These programmes aim to develop future business leaders with a strong understanding of both technology and management.
Expanding Global Collaborations
IIM Nagpur currently has an academic partnership with the University of Lille, France and aims to establish collaborations with 20 international universities over the next five years.
These partnerships will promote joint research, faculty and student exchange programmes, borderless education and international academic initiatives. The institute is also exploring opportunities to expand its presence in Goa.
Targeting a Top Three Position in Executive Education
The institute has set an ambitious goal of becoming one of India’s top three institutions for Executive Education. To achieve this, it plans to develop flexible, industry-integrated and lifelong learning programmes that enable working professionals to continuously upgrade their skills and leadership capabilities.
Focus on Energy, Climate and Sustainability
Beyond management education, IIM Nagpur is also prioritising energy management, clean energy and climate leadership.
The institute plans to offer an Executive MBA in Energy Management in collaboration with the National Power Training Institute (NPTI). It is also working with ONGC Green Limited and NRDC to establish centres of excellence focused on heat resilience and sustainable cooling technologies. Additionally, the institute will continue advancing its Net Zero Vision, expanding solar energy initiatives and developing a green campus ecosystem.
Contributing to the Vision of Viksit Bharat 2047
Prof. Bhimaraya Metri emphasized that the role of IIM Nagpur extends far beyond awarding management degrees. The institute aims to contribute actively to employment generation, entrepreneurship, public policy, clean energy, regional development and innovation, supporting India's vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
He added that the Pune campus will be much more than a new academic facility. It will serve as a next-generation centre for management education where technology, industry and leadership converge to prepare globally competitive professionals capable of representing India on the international stage.
