The initiative is being seen as a significant step toward enhancing AI-based media education, research and capacity building in India.
The academy was inaugurated by Chanchal Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during a special event held at the IIMC campus. The event was attended by Dr. Pragya Paliwal Gaur, Vice Chancellor of IIMC and Dr. Manish Gupta, Senior Director at Google DeepMind India. The occasion also celebrated the successful completion of a 10-week AI Skills Training Programme.
A New Chapter in AI-Driven Media Education
The AIME Academy is envisioned as a national center of excellence for AI in the media and entertainment sector. Its objective is to connect students, journalists, media educators, and communication professionals with emerging technologies and prepare them for the future needs of the industry.
The academy is built on five key pillars capacity building, research, innovation and incubation, responsible AI policy development and strategic collaboration. Through these focus areas, IIMC aims to transform traditional media education into technology-driven media training.
The academy will develop specialized training modules tailored to Indian requirements. It will also encourage practical research on the use of AI in journalism and promote the responsible adoption of AI in newsrooms.
Benefits for Students and Media Professionals Across India
IIMC’s six regional campuses located in New Delhi, Dhenkanal, Jammu, Aizawl, Amravati and Kottayam will play a key role in expanding this initiative nationwide. These centers will provide AI-based media training in multiple Indian languages.
Experts believe the initiative will help reduce language-based disparities in media education. It will enable journalists, students and educators working in regional languages to gain access to advanced AI technologies and training opportunities.
The academy also aims to bring Indian realities including multilingual communication, public service broadcasting, rural audiences and democratic diversity into the global conversation on AI and media. This is expected to support the development of AI solutions tailored to the needs of the Indian media ecosystem.
Successful Completion of AI Skills Training Programme
One of the major highlights of the event was the certificate distribution ceremony for participants who completed the AI Skills Training Programme. Participants from Doordarshan, All India Radio, Press Information Bureau (PIB), Publications Division and IIMC were formally recognized for completing the course. The 10-week hybrid programme provided media professionals, educators and students with foundational AI knowledge as well as hands-on training in advanced Google AI tools.
Participants learned to use platforms such as NotebookLM, Gemini, AI Studio, and Pinpoint, enabling them to build new skills in content creation, research, data analysis and digital journalism.
Participants from 23 Cities Joined the Programme
More than 110 participants from 23 cities across India took part in the training programme. The participants represented over 100 newsrooms, media colleges and public communication institutions.
Each participant received more than 40 hours of AI training along with personalized mentoring. As a result of the programme, participants created more than 170 AI-powered projects and several published works. In addition, participants developed over 50 AI-based applications and digital solutions, highlighting the growing role of AI in the media industry.
AI Is an Assistant, Not a Replacement: Chanchal Kumar
Addressing the gathering, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Chanchal Kumar said that AI presents a major opportunity for the media sector, but it should not be viewed as a substitute for human judgment and editorial responsibility. He emphasized that AI can improve speed, enhance content creation and support creativity, but journalistic credibility, accuracy and authenticity must always remain the top priorities.
He further stressed that the role of journalists, editors and media educators will become even more important in the AI era, as final decisions and accountability will continue to rest with human beings.
A Major Step Toward the Future of Education and Media
The launch of the AIME Academy is being regarded as a significant milestone in the modernization of media education in India. The initiative will not only connect students and media professionals with AI technologies but also promote a culture of responsible and ethical AI usage.
Experts believe that in the coming years, the academy has the potential to become a leading center for AI-based media education, research and innovation in India, while helping the media industry prepare for future challenges and opportunities.
