The Master of Design (MDes) programme at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar) is based on its Design and Innovation Centre. This course will integrate design thinking with engineering, technology, and social sciences. Its objective is to develop systems thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills among students so that they can effectively tackle real-world challenges.
This initiative is primarily part of the institute’s efforts to strengthen education and research in line with future needs.
On the other hand, the MTech in Maritime Engineering programme will include key subjects such as port and ocean infrastructure, logistics, and regulatory frameworks. This course is particularly important for states like Gujarat, where port and cargo activities are significant. The programme aims to address the shortage of skilled professionals in the maritime sector.
Focus on Future Technologies
IIT Gandhinagar is strengthening its academic and research focus in areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors, healthcare technologies, and sustainability, keeping in mind technological developments over the next decade. The institute aims to provide better opportunities and knowledge to students in these emerging fields.
The institute has also strengthened its academic programmes through collaborations with several leading educational institutions in the country. These include the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) Surat, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Agartala and ISRO’s Space Application Centre. Through these collaborations, students are also being offered dual-degree programmes.
Focus on Industry Linkages and Practical Learning
Through these new courses, students will get opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, industry collaboration and project-based education. Students will be able to work with industries, research laboratories and startups during the semester, allowing them to gain practical experience while working on real-world problems and earning academic credits.

IIT Gandhinagar Director Prof. Rajat Moona stated that in the coming years, the role of higher education institutions will go beyond subject knowledge. It is important for students to understand and solve complex real-world problems. He added that expansion into areas like design and maritime engineering reflects this vision, where creativity, technical knowledge and social understanding are brought together.
