This change has been introduced under the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023 and is considered one of the biggest reforms in the past two decades. The new approach moves away from chapter-based learning and instead emphasizes what students understand, how they think and how they apply knowledge in real-life situations.
Curriculum Divided into Three Parts
The new syllabus has been structured into three parts the first focuses on language and communication skills, the second includes core academic subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Social Science and the third introduces skill-based subjects, covering life skills, ethics and social responsibility.
Greater Focus on Indian History
A major change has been made in the history curriculum, where the focus has shifted towards the Indian context. History will now be taught as a continuous process, covering topics from prehistoric times to the development of civilizations, social and religious changes and India’s knowledge traditions such as zero, Ayurveda, philosophy and art. World history has not been removed but has been limited to comparative and analytical contexts, including topics like industrialization, colonialism, racism and the rise of modern nations.
Emphasis on Geography and Environment
In Geography, greater importance has been given to topics such as the structure of the Earth, climate change, natural resources and environmental challenges. Students will not only learn about these issues but also develop the ability to suggest solutions.
Changes in Political Science and Economics
In Political Science, students will study the Indian Constitution, fundamental rights, and the functioning of democracy in a practical manner. In Economics, topics such as production, demand and supply, organized and unorganized sectors, trade and e-commerce have been included.
Major Updates in Mathematics and Science
Mathematics has been expanded to include topics from higher classes such as arithmetic progression, geometric progression, linear equations in two variables and areas related to circles, aiming to strengthen students’ logical and analytical thinking at an early stage. In Science, some changes have been made, including bringing topics like reproduction to a lower class level, while removing certain topics.
Additionally, a new integrated English textbook has been introduced, focusing more on comprehension and expression. A new subject titled “Individual in Society” has also been added for the first time, which will teach students about social behavior, ethics and responsibility.
Changes in Examination System
The evaluation system has also been significantly reformed with the introduction of open-book examinations. This will help assess whether students truly understand concepts and can apply them, rather than simply memorizing information. Overall, the new syllabus marks an important step towards making education more modern, practical, and aligned with future needs.
