Madurai Plans Major EV Infrastructure Boost
Madurai has formed a dedicated EV cell to strengthen charging infrastructure and promote electric vehicle adoption across the city.

Madurai is witnessing growing demand from electric vehicle (EV) owners and prospective buyers for improved infrastructure, including more charging stations and service centres. Residents have emphasized the need for accessible public charging facilities to ease concerns and encourage wider EV adoption.

To strengthen the city’s EV ecosystem, the Madurai Corporation has formed a nine-member EV cell aimed at promoting electric vehicle adoption and implementing the Tamil Nadu EV Policy 2023. The initiative seeks to create awareness and provide structural support for the transition to electric mobility.

Several residents cited rising petrol prices and affordable two-wheeler EV options as key reasons for considering a switch. However, concerns about “range anxiety” remain. An electric two-wheeler owner noted that charging is currently limited to home setups, making long-distance travel a challenge due to battery limitations.

The EV cell includes Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan, along with representatives from the Smart City Development Group, District Transport Office, Tamil Nadu Tourism Board, Electricity Board, Pollution Control Board, Traffic Police, Department of Environment and Climate Change, and the Urban Development Department.

The cell aims to transform Madurai into an “EV City” by launching supportive schemes and incentives. Plans include setting up public charging stations with at least three chargers per location and introducing battery swapping stations for two- and three-wheelers to enable quick battery replacement.

Additionally, the corporation is considering incentives for battery recycling firms, road tax exemptions, purchase subsidies for EV buyers, and special incentives for manufacturers investing above a specified threshold. Through these measures, the administration aims to promote a cleaner, more sustainable, and environmentally friendly urban transport system.
