Maharashtra EV Registrations Rebound with 13% Growth in 2025–26
Electric vehicle registrations in Maharashtra rebounded with a 13% growth in 2025–26 after a 19% decline in the previous year, according to the state’s latest economic survey.

Improved charging infrastructure, new EV launches, and supportive policies have helped revive consumer interest and accelerate EV adoption across the state.

Electric vehicle (EV) registrations in Maharashtra witnessed a recovery in 2025–26 after experiencing a decline in the previous year. According to the state’s latest economic survey, EV registrations had dropped by 19% during 2024–25 but rebounded with a 13% growth in 2025–26.

The report also highlighted a sharp increase in the total number of motor vehicles in the state. As of January 1, 2026, Maharashtra had around 53 million registered vehicles, up from 49 million a year earlier. Two-wheelers accounted for the largest share of this growth, rising from 35 million to 38 million units. Vehicle density on roads has also increased, reaching 153 vehicles per kilometer, indicating mounting pressure on road infrastructure.

Experts attribute last year’s decline in EV demand largely to range anxiety among buyers and the lack of adequate charging infrastructure, particularly outside major urban centers. However, the situation has improved significantly over the past year with the installation of more public charging stations across the state, especially along highways.

Additionally, electricity distribution companies have started offering concessional power tariffs for EV charging connections in housing societies, which has helped reduce charging costs for consumers.

The availability of new electric vehicle models has also played a key role in reviving the market. Over the past year, several automobile manufacturers introduced new EV models across hatchback, SUV, and premium segments, giving consumers more choices. Electric two-wheelers, in particular, have driven adoption due to their lower upfront cost and suitability for daily urban commuting.

By December 2025, Maharashtra had registered 927,061 battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The state’s EV policy aims to promote the adoption and manufacturing of electric vehicles, expand charging infrastructure in both urban and rural areas, encourage the electrification of public transport, and strengthen research, innovation, and skill development to position Maharashtra as a leading EV hub in India.
