Microsoft Quantum Discovery Center Opens at University of Maryland, Creating New Research & Career Opportunities
The College Park Discovery Center brings together Microsoft, quantum companies, researchers, and startups, creating new opportunities for students through hands-on training, research, and industry collaboration.

New Facilities for Quantum Research and Learning

University of Maryland and its industry partners, along with Microsoft Quantum, have launched a new Quantum Research Center. It also features a Quantum Hardware Makerspace, where students, researchers, faculty and other learners can work on practical projects using real quantum hardware. Microsoft has also announced funding for quantum postdoctoral positions and the launch of an annual research workshop series.

The center is located in the new Discovery Center in Discovery District Maryland. The three-story building includes research labs, offices and space for companies and university startups. Microsoft, in collaboration with University of Maryland and the Capital of Quantum Initiative has developed a nearly 15,000-square-foot Quantum Research Center.

Students to Gain Practical Industry and Research Exposure

The primary objective of the new center is to connect academic research with industry and quantum technology development. Microsoft’s research center will work with University of Maryland faculty and students, industry partners, government and businesses. This will give students project-based experience in areas related to quantum computing hardware, software, and applications.

Hands-on Training to Strengthen Students’ Quantum Skills

Microsoft Quantum has established a Hardware Makerspace at the center. With support from early partners including AMD, Bluefors, Intel, IQM, Fermilab, Riverlane and Quantum Motion, learners will have the opportunity to work with real quantum hardware and experts. The initiative aims to provide practical experience to the next generation of quantum professionals.

According to Microsoft, the research center will help bring quantum research, partner integration, workforce development, and government collaboration together on a single platform. This will allow students and researchers to work on emerging technologies while also gaining a better understanding of real-world industry requirements.

DARPA Partnership to Advance Quantum Research and Testing

At the center, Microsoft is making its topological qubits based on the Majorana 2 quantum chip available to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for independent testing and evaluation. This is part of research focused on the development of large-scale quantum computing technology.

Quantum Ecosystem Taking Shape for Startups and Students

University of Maryland’s Quantum Startup Foundry is also moving its labs and offices to the Discovery Center. Programs such as the TraQtion Market Accelerator and Pre-TraQtion will support early-stage quantum startups. According to the university, its quantum ecosystem includes hundreds of researchers working across eight quantum centers and institutes.

The presence of university researchers, technology companies and startups at the Discovery Center could expand opportunities for students in research, mentorship, and industry connections. It will also create a collaborative environment for taking new quantum technology ideas from research to products and businesses.

Maryland’s Quantum Mission Crosses $500 Million Investment Mark

The Discovery Center is part of Maryland’s Capital of Quantum Initiative, which aims to attract more than $1 billion in investment for quantum research, infrastructure, companies and workforce development. According to the state, the initiative has already secured commitments of more than $500 million in investment.

For University of Maryland, the center is emerging as a platform connecting quantum education with research, industry and entrepreneurship. Students and researchers will have opportunities to work on advanced technologies, learn from experts and develop the skills needed for the future quantum sector.
