SML Isuzu Limited plans to launch its first electric bus in FY27, marking its entry into the EV segment while maintaining a cautious stance on green mobility investments and market readiness.
Chairman Vinod Sahay said the electric bus is currently under development and will be rolled out within the current financial year. Post-launch, the company will evaluate further opportunities based on commercial viability and expected returns.
Sahay emphasized that green technology in the commercial vehicle (CV) industry will not be limited to battery-electric solutions alone. He noted that technologies like Hydrogen Fuel Cell are expected to play a significant role, especially in the heavy truck segment.
At present, electric bus adoption remains largely confined to state transport undertakings, with minimal participation from private operators such as school and employee transport providers. High upfront costs, long payback periods, and inadequate charging infrastructure continue to be key barriers, keeping the segment’s share below 1%.
Leveraging the EV capabilities of the Mahindra Group, SML Isuzu said it is technologically prepared to scale up quickly as the market evolves. However, the company will continue to prioritize growth in its conventional CV business while monitoring EV demand trends.
