The board of Tata Sons has approved the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran as Executive Chairman for another five-year term. The decision comes after Chandrasekaran reconsidered his decision last month not to seek reappointment. His current term is scheduled to end on February 20, 2027.
According to Tata Sons, the Tata Trusts had recommended Chandrasekaran’s reappointment for another five-year term in July 2025, recognising his leadership of the Tata Group. However, the required consensus was not reached in February 2026, and the matter remained unresolved despite board discussions in May and June. Chandrasekaran subsequently informed the board on August 12, 2026, that he would not seek reappointment after completing his current term.
Following this, the Nomination and Remuneration Committee (NRC) met on September 3 and requested Chandrasekaran to reconsider his decision, while recommending his reappointment in the interests of the Tata Group. At the board meeting on September 17, Chandrasekaran agreed to reconsider, following which the board approved his new five-year term by a majority vote.
During his next term, the Tata Group is expected to continue investments across automobiles, electric mobility, batteries and semiconductors. Group companies are working on projects including Agratas’ battery cell manufacturing facility in Gujarat, Tata Electronics’ semiconductor fabrication facility in Gujarat and an assembly and testing facility in Assam.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is also investing in new electric platforms and the electrification of its global product portfolio. The board’s decision comes amid continued discussions around Tata Sons’ regulatory status and potential stock market listing. According to Reuters, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has rejected Tata Sons’ request to surrender its registration as a Core Investment Company, keeping the company subject to the applicable listing requirements.
