Greaves Electric Mobility has developed and patented a rare-earth-free motor architecture for electric vehicles. The company announced the development through a LinkedIn post on Wednesday. The technology is aimed at reducing dependence on critical minerals used in EV powertrains and supporting a more self-reliant electric mobility ecosystem.
According to Greaves Electric Mobility, the new motor architecture delivers torque, power and efficiency comparable to conventional rare-earth-based motors. The company also claims that the architecture offers higher thermal stability, which can support motor performance and reliability in electric vehicle applications.
The company said the technology could help reduce the dependence of EV powertrains on rare-earth materials and minimise exposure to risks associated with global critical mineral supply chains. Greaves added that the development is intended to support a more resilient and self-reliant technology ecosystem for electric mobility.
The patented architecture is part of Greaves Electric Mobility focus on developing EV technologies locally. The company operates in the electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments and has an R&D ecosystem supporting its broader mobility portfolio.
Commenting on the development, Greaves Electric Mobility said, “What if high-performance EV motors didn't need rare-earth materials? Our rare-earth-free motor architecture proves they don't.” The company said the architecture combines high performance with improved thermal stability, potentially addressing an important requirement in EV motor applications.
