Toyota Enters India EV Market with Urban Cruiser Ebella
Toyota Kirloskar Motor has unveiled the Urban Cruiser Ebella EV, its first electric SUV for India, based on the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara and offering an ARAI-certified range of up to 543 km.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Tuesday unveiled the Urban Cruiser Ebella, marking the company’s entry into India’s electric vehicle market. The electric midsize SUV is a badge-engineered version of the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara and will be offered with two lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery options.

The Urban Cruiser Ebella will be available with a 49 kWh battery producing 106 kW of power and 189 Nm of torque, and a 61 kWh battery delivering 128 kW and 189 Nm of torque. The larger battery variant offers an ARAI-certified range of up to 543 km on a single charge.

Toyota’s rebadging strategy under its partnership with Maruti Suzuki continues to play a key role in its India operations. Rebadged models accounted for over 53 percent of total passenger vehicle dispatches in the first nine months of FY2026.

In calendar year 2025, Toyota reported total sales of 388,801 units, a growth of 19 percent over 326,329 units in CY2024. The Innova Hycross remained the brand’s best-selling model, while the Urban Cruiser Hyryder emerged as the highest-selling rebadged vehicle. The Hyryder crossed the 200,000 sales milestone in December 2025, climbing to the 15th position among India’s top utility vehicles.

Other rebadged models include the Glanza hatchback, which sold 42,888 units in FY2026 so far, and the Urban Cruiser Taisor, with sales of 26,726 units.

The Urban Cruiser EV enters a rapidly expanding EV market. According to Vahan Portal data, India recorded 2.3 million EV sales in CY2025, accounting for 8 percent of all new vehicle registrations.

In the midsize electric SUV segment, the Hyundai Creta Electric sold 6,726 units after its January 2025 launch, while new entrant VinFast sold 826 units within three months of entering the market with its locally assembled VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs.

While sharing its platform and powertrain with the e-Vitara, the Urban Cruiser Ebella differentiates itself with Toyota’s Hammerhead front design, sleeker LED headlamps with DRLs, and unique LED taillight signatures. Inside, it features a dual-screen setup with a 10.25-inch digital driver display and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with JBL audio.

Additional features include ventilated front seats, a 10-way powered driver seat, fixed glass roof, and a 360-degree camera. Safety equipment includes Level 2 ADAS, seven airbags, ESC, traction control, and ABS with EBD. The e-Vitara’s 5-star Bharat NCAP rating is expected to carry over due to the shared platform.

Toyota is offering an eight-year battery warranty, a Battery-as-a-Service option, and an Assured Buy Back programme promising up to 60 percent residual value after three years. The company has readied over 500 BEV-enabled service touchpoints across India, supported by more than 2,500 BEV-certified technicians.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor operates two manufacturing plants at Bidadi, Karnataka, with a combined installed capacity of 342,000 units annually. Its current portfolio includes models such as the Innova HyCross, Fortuner, Camry Hybrid, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Glanza, Taisor, and Vellfire.

Bookings for the Urban Cruiser Ebella are open from today at ₹25,000, with prices expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
