India-US Academic Collaboration Set to Gain New Momentum, Opening Fresh Opportunities for Students and Researchers


In a significant step towards strengthening higher education and research cooperation between India and the United States, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and the State University of New York Old Westbury (SUNY Old Westbury) have announced a new partnership in the fields of science and engineering education. The collaboration aims to create new academic and research opportunities for students, faculty members and researchers from both institutions.

During a special event held in New York, IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh Kedare and SUNY Old Westbury President Dr. Timothy E. Sams signed a Letter of Intent to formalize the partnership. The signing ceremony was attended by Binaya Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York.

Special Focus on Engineering and Emerging Technologies

Under this partnership, both institutions will work together across various areas of science and engineering. Particular emphasis will be placed on emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), advanced technologies, engineering innovation and multidisciplinary research.

According to the institutions, the collaboration will extend beyond curriculum development and will focus on promoting joint research projects, knowledge exchange and innovation. This initiative is expected to provide students with exposure to world-class academic and research environments.

International Exposure for Students and Researchers

Education experts believe that partnerships between global universities offer students valuable opportunities to learn and conduct research at an international level. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Welcomes the Initiative

The announcement event was attended virtually by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Higher Education Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi, and India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra.

Welcoming the partnership, Dharmendra Pradhan said that collaborations in engineering, technology, multidisciplinary research and other emerging fields will strengthen India’s education and research ecosystem. He emphasized that such international partnerships create new opportunities for students, researchers and educators while encouraging knowledge-based cooperation to address global challenges.

In his message, he noted that initiatives of this nature play a crucial role in showcasing India’s intellectual capabilities on the global stage.

IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh Kedare said that the institute is excited to work with SUNY Old Westbury. According to him, the strengths and expertise of both institutions complement each other, making the collaboration capable of delivering meaningful outcomes in the future.

Similarly, SUNY Old Westbury President Dr. Timothy E. Sams described IIT Bombay as one of the world’s leading technical institutions and stated that the partnership would help advance excellence in science, engineering, and innovation.

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, highlighted that the collaboration would further strengthen India-US relations in the areas of higher education, research and technological innovation.

Higher Education Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi described the partnership as an important and proud chapter in India-US cooperation in higher education and research. He noted that collaboration among universities has become more important than ever in addressing global challenges.
